Wedding season · Style guide

Holud, mehendi, biye, reception and the dawats after. Here's what jewellery to wear to each event of a Bangladeshi wedding, with colours to match and pieces that make getting ready easy.

By Avora 4 min read

Winter in Bangladesh means one thing: wedding invitations. One week it's a cousin's gaye holud, the next it's a friend's reception, and somewhere in between there's a mehendi night you promised not to miss. The outfits get planned weeks ahead. The jewellery? Usually five minutes before leaving the house.

This guide fixes that. Each event in a Bangladeshi wedding has its own mood, colours and time of day, and the right jewellery changes with it. Below you'll find what to wear to each one, which colours to match, and the pieces from our collection that work best, so you can get ready faster and still look like you planned it.

The one rule for wedding guests

The bride is the one in the heaviest set. As a guest, your job is to look polished and festive, not to compete. Pick one area to shine, your neck, your wrist or your hands, and keep the rest light. It looks more expensive, it photographs better, and you'll be far more comfortable after six hours of dancing, eating and taking photos.

Gaye Holud

Gaye holud: bright, playful and full of colour

Wear it withTurmericMarigoldLeaf green

Holud is the happiest, messiest day of the whole wedding. Everyone is in yellow, orange or green, there's turmeric on every cheek, and somebody will definitely pull you onto the dance floor. Heavy jewellery just gets in the way.

Think colour and movement instead. A hand chain with red and green stones looks lovely against a yellow saree and shows up in every photo of you holding a plate of mishti. If you're wearing flower jewellery, keep your metal pieces to your hands so the two don't fight.

Styling tip Turmeric stains. Put your jewellery on after the holud is applied to the bride, or wipe it straight away with a dry tissue.

Mehendi

Mehendi night: let your hands do the talking

Wear it withMehendi greenFuchsiaMustard

At a mehendi, everyone ends up looking at hands. Yours will be covered in fresh designs, so give them a little sparkle to match. A fine hand chain or a delicate ring sits beautifully over mehendi without hiding the pattern.

Go for lighter, simpler pieces here. Bold bangles can smudge wet mehendi and you'll spend the night worrying about it. Save the statement cuffs for later in the week.

Styling tip Wait until your mehendi is fully dry, at least an hour, before putting on a hand chain or ring. Otherwise the paste gets stuck in the links.

Biye

The biye: classic gold with your best saree

Wear it withMaroonRedOld gold

This is the big day, and most guests bring out their best katan, jamdani or silk. Rich colours like maroon, red, deep green and gold need jewellery with a bit of weight, but you still don't want to look like the bride.

The easiest way to get it right is a matching set on your wrist and finger, with a simple pendant or nothing at all around your neck. A sculpted bangle catches the light when you lift your hand for the camera, and the matching ring finishes the look without any extra effort.

Styling tip Match your jewellery to the zari on your saree. Gold zari goes with gold tone. If the border is silver, go with silver or mixed tones.

Reception

Reception and bou-bhaat: evening glam

Wear it withBlackNavyChampagne

Receptions are in the evening, the lights are warm and the outfits get darker and sleeker. Black, navy, emerald and deep wine are everywhere, and this is where jewellery with darker stones really shines.

Try a hand chain with black stones or a pendant with a dark centre against a jewel-toned saree or a sleek gown. Add one bold cuff and you're done. Evening photos love contrast, so gold against dark fabric always wins.

Styling tip Under stage lights, polished gold reflects more than textured gold. If you want to stand out in photos, choose the shinier piece.

Dawat

The week after: family dawats and visits

Wear it withPastel pinkMintIvory

After the wedding come the dawats: lunch at the new in-laws, dinner at an aunt's house, a never-ending round of visits. You'll want to look nice, but nobody needs another heavy outfit by now.

This is where your everyday pieces come in. A small pearl pendant and a simple cuff go with a cotton salwar kameez or a light saree, and they're comfortable enough to wear for a long afternoon of tea and conversation.

Styling tip Keep one light set in your handbag during wedding season. When an unplanned dawat comes up, you're ready in a minute.

Packing your jewellery for a wedding week

If you're travelling to a wedding outside Dhaka, keep each piece in its own pouch or wrapped in a soft tissue, and pack them in your handbag, not your suitcase. Hand chains and fine necklaces tangle easily, so lay them flat. A small zip pouch for each event saves you from untangling chains five minutes before the car leaves.

Your wedding season checklist

One colourful piece for holud. Something light for your hands at the mehendi. A matching set for the biye. One darker, shinier piece for the reception. And a simple everyday pendant for the dawats after. That's five looks from a handful of pieces, and you'll never be stuck at the last minute again.

Questions we get asked

What jewellery should a wedding guest wear in Bangladesh?

Choose one area to highlight: your neck, wrists or hands. Colourful hand chains work well for holud and mehendi, a matching bangle and ring set suits the main biye, and darker or shinier pieces look best at evening receptions.

What jewellery goes with a holud outfit?

Light, colourful pieces like a hand chain with red or green stones, or a simple enamel pendant. Avoid heavy sets, as holud is a fun, active day and turmeric can stain your jewellery.

Can I wear a hand chain with mehendi?

Yes, a fine hand chain looks beautiful over mehendi. Just wait until your mehendi is completely dry before putting it on.

Should my jewellery match my saree's zari?

It helps. Gold zari pairs best with gold-tone jewellery, while silver zari looks great with silver or mixed-tone pieces.
